ROSEVILLE — Finishing 2010-11 9-17, 0-7 in the Macomb Area Conference, seems to be a distant memory for Roseville High School wrestlers and coach Davon Gray.

“Everybody knows last year was a transitional year,” said Gray, in his second year at the helm. “They didn’t know what to expect from me and vice versa, and I think that played a role in how we did last year.”

CLAWSON — Winning one district title isn’t something Clawson High School wrestling coach Keil Jorgensen wants to hang his hat on.

“I told our guys, it’s OK for them to remember the past, but not to relive it,” said Jorgensen, who is in his third year with the team.

The Trojans’ 2010-11 squad was the school’s first in 36 years to capture a district title after finishing 23-7, 7-1 in the Macomb Area Conference Gold Division.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP —Chippewa Valley High School wrestling coach Gary Brundirks hopes the makeup of his roster is solid enough so that, unlike certain points last year, the Big Reds aren’t behind in points before even hitting the mat.

“We didn’t have a lot of guys in the upper weight divisions last year, so we had to forfeit two to three matches each meet,” said Brundirks, whose squad finished 2010-11 at 17-10, 3-4 in the Macomb Area Conference Red Division.

MACOMB TOWNSHIP — Macomb Dakota wrestling coach Bill Witgen gushes when discussing the prospects for this year’s squad.

“We were really young last year,” said Witgen, in his fourth year with the Cougars. “Now, we’re just a year older, stronger and bigger. On paper, this team should be a state (finals) qualifier.”

ST. CLAIR SHORES — The loss of key contributors from last year’s team has led St. Clair Shores Lake Shore basketball coach Todd Stevens to implement a new style of play this season.

“We’re going to have to get out and run,” said Stevens, in his eighth season with the program. “Our tallest guys are 6 foot 2, so we’re gonna have to get up and down the floor because of a lack of size.”

FRASER — Fraser High School senior wrestler Mark Dilaura has a theory on why the squad didn’t fare as well as it would have liked last season.

“Even though it’s early, everybody is more together as a team,” the 125-pounder said of the group that finished 7-12, 2-5 in the Macomb Area Conference Blue Division. “We had a lot of guys quit on us last year. I think that togetherness can play a huge role in us being successful this year.”

UTICA — After falling just short last year, Utica High wrestling coach Clint Davis believes his senior-laden team is primed for a special season.

“We lost in the (district finals) by three points. It was a heartbreaker,” said Davis, who is in his sixth season as Utica’s head man. “I think having the season end the way it did got the kids fired up for this year.”

The Chieftains return 10 of their top 14 grapplers from last season’s squad, which went 14-6, 4-3 in the Macomb Area Conference White Division.

MADISON HEIGHTS — Lamphere High School wrestling coach Russ McKenzie said he’s going to lean on every guy on this year’s roster to produce because of a shortage of seniors on this year’s squad.

“We’ve got a lot of youth, but we have a lot of talent, too,” McKenzie said during the Rams’ first practice. “I’m looking for us to develop in every area day to day.”
