FARMINGTON — A 15-3 run by the Ann Arbor Huron girls basketball team that spanned the third and fourth quarters of a regional semifinal matchup with West Bloomfield proved to be the difference, as the River Rats bested the Lakers 50-44 at Farmington High March 6, ending West Bloomfield's season.

The run — the biggest in a game that was tight throughout — gave Huron a 47-35 lead, which the Lakers battled back to cut to three with 55.6 seconds left, but River Rats sealed the win with free throws.

Trojans coach Billy Shellenbarger was happy to pick up the win, but wasn't exactly pleased with the way his team executed.

WEST BLOOMFIELD — It’s cliché, but at the start of the playoffs, West Bloomfield girls basketball coach Steve Larkin told his squad to take it “one game at a time.”

“We knew we wanted to win a district title, but we also knew we couldn’t do that without winning the games it takes to make it to the finals,” Larkin said.

That approach seems to have worked for the Lakers, as the squad was one win away from a Class A district title and a trip to regionals at press time.

SOUTHFIELD — In besting crosstown rival Southfield High March 2 to win a distric title, Southfield-Lathrup over the course of the district final ran a variety of defensive sets in getting a 48-29 victory.

The win gives the Chargers nine district titles in the last 10 years.

"We won a state title in 2006 and I've told every group since then that the teams that win at this time of the season are the teams that play great defense," said Lathrup coach Michele Marshall, in her 20th year with the team.

LIVONIA —Ferndale High sophomore Taryn Stephens was at a loss for words after her squad edged Ferndale University High 60-53 at Livonia Clarenceville High School March 2 in a hard-fought Class B district final.

"All you can really do is smile," said Stephens, whose ball handling led to a broken press and lay-up that pushed the Eagles' lead to 55-45 late in the fourth quarter.

"We just fought so hard. It feels really good."

WARREN — Grosse Pointe North 119-pound grappler Patrick Salazar didn’t take the route many of classmates took when they joined the wrestling team together four years ago.

“A lot of guys who I came into the program quit a long time ago,” said Salazar, who at press time had a 44-7 record and was the team’s lone senior.

“I wasn’t going to do that. I figure, if I start something, I might as well finish it.”

CLAWSON — In winning consecutive Macomb Area Conference Silver Division titles, the 11 seniors on the Clawson High boys basketball team have built a legacy they should carry with them even after they leave the program, according to coach Billy Shellenbarger.

“In accomplishing this, they’ve learned what you get when you put in hours of hard work and you develop toughness, you stick together, and you play hard every night,” said Shellenbarger, in his fourth year with the Trojans.

WEST BLOOMFIELD - West Bloomfield High girls basketball coach Steve Larkin said he didn't want to have to rely on a zone defense to get wins in the postseason but the 2-3 zone he implemented in a district quarterfinal Feb. 27 against Farmington High at West Bloomfield played a major role in the Lakers besting the Falcons 56-36.

"We hadn't really worked on a zone that much, but that's one of those things where you stick with what works," said Larkin, whose team improved to 8-12 and will host Walled Lake Western in a semifinal at 7 p.m. Feb. 29.

BATTLE CREEK —  After the Panthers won a second straight regional title Feb. 15, Roseville High wrestling coach Davon Gray joked his squad needed to avoid Novi Detroit Catholic Central in the state finals if they wanted to have a shot at winning.

That proved true when Catholic Central  downed Roseville 73-3 in a Division 1 state quarterfinal Feb. 24 to move on to the state semifinals of the team dual tournament held at Battle Creek's Kellogg Arena.
