Thomas Meagher grew up on a farm in Port Austin, Michigan, and was drafted into the U.S. Army. He went ashore with the 2nd Infantry Division at Omaha Beach early on June 7, 1944, 24 hours after the liberation of Europe began.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — By the summer of 2015, the parking lot at Kyte Monroe will be going green.
The city of St. Clair Shores, along with the city of Detroit, received a grant through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative from the Environmental Protection Agency.
With St. Clair Shores’ proximity to the lake, Mayor Kip Walby said it’s very important to keep pollutants from getting into Lake St. Clair.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — This year will see more development coming to St. Clair Shores, according to Mayor Kip Walby.
He announced during his 2014 State of the City Address that officials have been working with the owner of the Shores Theatre, as well as Emagine Entertainment, to “use the building that sits there today, try to make it historical, make it look like the way it looked in the ’40s.”
“It is not an easy task,” he continued. “We all know that we would really love to bring that theater back again.”

Starting plants like marigolds and tomatoes indoors from seeds helps beat the winter blues.
“It is nice to see things grow,” said Joni Makowski, store manager of Allemon’s Landscape Center in Detroit. “It is a good activity for the family. The longer the winter, everybody thinks about it. I have four kids. We always plant different seeds in eggshells.”

WARREN — Taking time to showcase how business in Macomb County is excelling, a half-dozen companies were honored at the 2014 Home in Macomb Business Awards at the Andiamo Celebrity Showroom Feb. 11.
Stephen Cassin, director of the Macomb County Department of Planning and Economic Development, said this is the second year of the awards, which they give out as part of their Home in Macomb Program to retain and attract businesses to the county.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — Partaking in a day set aside to support healthy, affordable and sustainable food for everyone, dozens of local students, volunteers and administrators turned out to St. Margaret of Scotland Church Oct. 24.
That’s when 63 students joined with volunteers from Shorewood Kiwanis and the Macomb County Health Department to package 10,000 meals for Kids Against Hunger in an event sponsored by Shorewood Kiwanis.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — Scattered throughout the city, six residential homes and businesses stood out from the rest.
Taking time to beautify and maintain their properties throughout the year, the three homes and three businesses were honored with Beautification Awards at the Sept. 16 City Council meeting.
“We just feel it’s very important to recognize those residents and those businesses that go the extra mile to beautify their property,” said Councilman John Caron, the liaison to the St. Clair Shores Beautification Commission.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — The tents were filled with organic foods, rain barrels, electric bikes and other ways to go green — which, of course, is the point of the Green Fair at Veterans Memorial Park.
“I was really excited to see this was happening close to home,” said Maureen Hermes, of St. Clair Shores, who rode her bike to the fair Aug. 24.
She said, with three children, she tries to be environmentally conscious, but it’s not always easy. That’s why she was excited to learn more about environmental awareness at the Green Fair.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — Hours before cruisers and spectators took to Harper Avenue, the dark clouds parted and blue sky shone through to make way for classic cars, hotrods and other specialty vehicles to take to the road.
That lucky turn of events didn’t surprise Bob Joannides, of St. Clair, though. He said it happens every year.
“The weather turns beautiful for this cruise,” he said, sitting outside Swick Tax Service just south of 10 Mile Road.
