WARREN — The days grow short. There’s a chill in the air. The thought of zombies and the looming Michigan winter make it scary.

Still, there’s lots of fun to be had.

Warren will host the final two farmers markets of 2016 at City Square Oct. 23 and Oct. 30.  That’s north of 12 Mile and just east of Van Dyke.

On Oct. 23, the market will host the Farm to Fork with the Able Chef cooking show at 10:30 a.m. For the truly intrepid and twisted, 10:30 a.m. will also mark the start time for the Warren Relay for Life Zombie 5K Run & Walk, the proceeds from which will supplement donations raised through the American Cancer Society’s signature 24-hour fundraiser each summer.

“This is the second time we’ve done the zombie walk,” event chair Bev Watson said. “This time, we’re including a 5K run for those that are looking to get another run in before the seasons change. It’s mostly for fun. People like to dress up as zombies these days. It’s something people are really starting to enjoy.”

Warren Parks and Recreation Director Henry Bowman said the walk will begin and end at City Square. But he said the journey will take walkers and runners through “Zombieland” at the city’s Licht Park, where some surprises will be in store.

Watson said anyone wishing to run in the 5K can register for the event for $25 in advance or $30 the day of the race. Adult walkers, pun intended, cost $10; kids ages 4 and up cost $5; and little zombies 3 and younger walk for free.

Sign-in begins at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 23. To register or for more information, search for the Warren Relay for Life Zombie 5K at www.runsignup.com.

A bit closer to Halloween, Bowman said, the final market day of the year will feature trick-or-treating from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On both Oct. 23 and Oct. 30, he said, market patrons will find plenty of food, wares, entertainment and activities to close out the season.

“We are seeing a few pumpkins coming in now. You can get pumpkins and gourds here, absolutely,” Bowman said. “Come and see us, and shop for the last time this year at the Warren Farmers Market.”
