WARREN — A woman told police she was robbed and assaulted by a man while walking to a dollar store near Martin Road and Van Dyke Avenue at about 9:30 a.m. July 4.

The suspect — described as black, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 170 pounds, with short braided hair — was reportedly wearing a blue T-shirt and black jeans. He allegedly approached the woman in the parking lot of Dollar General, 27858 Van Dyke Ave., armed with a sharp object of some type.

“He approaches her and demands her money. She looked through her purse. She only has a dollar, so she gives him that,” said Detective Sgt. Robert Eidt, of the Warren Police Department.

The man then allegedly got angry and assaulted the victim.

“He grabs her and starts choking her, and apparently she tried to fight him off and was actually able to kick him in the groin,” Eidt said. “At that point, he then took off.”

The woman’s forearms were reportedly cut during the assault, but she did not require medical treatment. She told detectives she went home before she went to the police station with her husband to file a report.

Warren patrol officers reportedly checked the area with negative results. The investigation remained ongoing at press time.
