BIRMINGHAM — A pedestrian crossing southbound Woodward Avenue at Brown Street was fatally hit by a driver last Friday.

According to police, it was around 9:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17, when a 29-year-old Birmingham woman was crossing Woodward in the crosswalk at Brown. She was reportedly crossing against the traffic signal, and a vehicle traveling southbound on Woodward under a green traffic signal struck her in the far left lane, closest to the median.

Police and fire personnel responded to the accident immediately, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, a 24-year-old Bloomfield Hills woman, immediately stopped at the scene and has reportedly fully cooperated with the police investigation.

“Alcohol was not a factor,” said Birmingham Police Cmdr. Scott Grewe, noting that the accident investigation is not yet complete. “I don’t think there is anything in particular (that made it harder for the driver to see the victim). The incident did occur during the evening hours in a lighted stretch of Woodward.”

Though Grewe said city cameras recorded the accident, witnesses are still being asked to contact police with any information they might have at (248) 530-1889.
