EASTPOINTE — A 28-year-old Eastpointe woman has been charged with child abuse in connection with the deaths of three children in an Eastpointe house fire in March.

Amber Renee Swain has been charged in connection with the March 10 house fire on Juliana Avenue, near East Eight Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue. Investigators said the fire started around 5 a.m. while the children, ages 4, 8 and 9, were alone in the home.

No cause was ever determined for the fire, but investigators said it likely was accidental. First responders said the home did not have smoke detectors. Police said two younger children also lived in the home, but added that they were at another home nearby at the time of the fire.

“She had a warrant out for the child abuse charges (issued recently), and she turned herself in on Nov. 6,” said Roseville Deputy Police Chief Eric Keiser. “She was arraigned that same day and is being held on $25,000 bail.”

Swain was charged with three counts of second-degree child abuse. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison. Her case is taking place in 38th District Court.

“We were supposed to have our probable cause conference today (Nov. 20). It has been adjourned to Dec. 18,” said Swain’s lawyer, John Dakmak. “There’s more material to review, so it’s probably too early to make any comment on the case at this time.”

Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith and his office did not wish to comment on the case.
