WARREN — Warren’s weekly Farmers Market will open for the season at 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 22, with a flurry of events to follow that day and throughout the summer.

Warren Parks and Recreation Director Henry Bowman said the market — held at City Square, next to City Hall off Van Dyke, north of 12 Mile Road, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Sunday — will host programs and activities this year ranging from cooking demonstrations to entertainment and, of course, market vendors.

This year’s offerings include a monthly cooking show with Able Chef Chuck Sansone.

“He’s quite the inspiration and will be doing all of the shows from his wheelchair,” Bowman said. “We are really looking forward to this show and I think it’s going to be a big hit.”

Rotating food vendors for this year include Warren’s Motor City Meatball Kitchen on May 22 and throughout the summer on the fourth Sunday of the month.

Entertainment scheduled for May and early June includes “Music at the Market,” featuring Nashville recording artist Bernadette Kathryn on May 22, the Total Rehab Band on May 29, Second Chance on June 5, Geezer on June 12, and Mark Reitenga on June 19.

On May 29, the Warren Farmers Market will host a special Flower and Plant Day in conjunction with the city’s annual Greatest Garage Sale.

Health and Fitness Day at the Market, planned for June 5, will feature inflatable attractions for kids, a petting zoo, a magic show, miniature golf, and Arts and Scraps. Freebees slated for giveaways on June 5 include bike helmets, while supplies last, and pedometers.

“We love being a community gathering spot,” Bowman said. “It’s just going to be a high-energy area with all the different activities going on. It’s going to be an absolutely fantastic year.”
