Veterans, first responders invited to holiday event

GROSSE POINTE FARMS — For the fourth year, current military members, veterans, first responders and their families are invited to a free holiday celebration in their honor at The War Memorial.

The Wins for Warriors Foundation has again teamed with The War Memorial to present 1,000 Christmas Salutes on Dec. 23. The event will include strolling food and beverages, holiday music, photo opportunities with Santa, arts and crafts, and a screening of the new film version of Dr. Seuss’ “The Grinch.”

Wins for Warriors was founded by Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander, formerly with the Detroit Tigers.

“This is a small way to say thank you to our military and veteran families, who sacrifice so much for the freedoms we enjoy,” Verlander said in a press release. “The holidays are meant to be enjoyed with family, and thanks to our partnership with The War Memorial, we are able to bring local military and veteran families together to enjoy a fun Christmas celebration that honors their sacrifices and salutes their commitment to our country.”

War Memorial officials said about 800 service members and their families attended this event last year. Participants are asked to register for one of three meal/activity times — 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. or 4 p.m. — and one of four movie screenings offered between 10 a.m. and 5:45 p.m.

“1,000 Christmas Salutes affirms our mission of being a patriotic leader and acts as our gift to military families during the holiday season,” War Memorial President and CEO Charles Burke said in a press release.
