Utica switches to new rubbish collection company

UTICA — The city of Utica made the decision to change its rubbish pickup company June 7.

“After many years of service with Waste Management, The City bid out the rubbish service and has chosen Priority Waste, a local company,” Beth Ricketts, the city clerk of Utica, said in an email.

Utica City Councilman Gus Calandrino said that officials are happy with the process that they went through to get the bid and look forward to working with the new company.

“We received bids from three companies for the Utica Rubbish Collection services. City Council awarded the contract to Priority Waste. The representatives from Priority Waste were very proactive and answered all our questions. They seem very anxious to do a great job for Utica residents,” Calandrino said in an email.

Priority Waste is located in Clinton Township and services many locations in southeast Michigan. The contract with Priority Waste is for five years.

According to the city, residents will have their new bins delivered to their homes; some might have already started receiving them.

“Each household will receive two rolling containers: a 95-gallon container for rubbish and a 65-gallon container for recycling. The price for the containers was included in the bid. This will hopefully give Utica a neater and cleaner appearance. The containers will also reduce the spread of rodents and other vermin,” said Calandrino.

Unlike the previous scheduled pickup date, residents will now have a rubbish pickup date on Thursdays, instead.

Service with Priority will begin on Thursday, July 2. Bins will need to be set out for pickup on Wednesdays after 7 p.m.

Ricketts said there are requirements that must be followed in order to successfully have rubbish and recycling picked up each week.

“Yard Waste must be in (i) trash cans clearly labeled ‘Yard Waste,’ (ii) securely tied bundles weighing less than 60 pounds and not more than 4 feet long, or (iii) in paper bags (plastic bags are not acceptable for yard waste). Additional Yard Waste requirement: Branches must not exceed 2-inches in diameter,” she said.
