WARREN/CENTER LINE — An argument between partygoers and other guests at a Warren inn apparently escalated in Center Line early July 4, leaving two men injured with gunshot wounds.

The men, an 18-year-old Warren resident and an 18-year-old Detroit resident, arrived at a local hospital shortly after a 4 a.m. 911 call that sent Center Line public safety officers to investigate a report of shots fired near the intersection of Van Dyke Avenue and Theisen Street, south of 10 Mile Road.

Lt. Thomas Costello, of the Center Line Public Safety Department, said patrol officers arrived to find just a few people and no signs of a shooting. He said the investigation intensified after the hospital called the department to report the arrival of gunshot victims, who indicated that they had been shot in Center Line.

Costello said the investigation revealed that the shootings were the end result of an apparent argument of some type between two groups of people at the Red Roof Inn, 26300 Dequindre Road, near 11 Mile Road, in Warren.

“I believe it was a birthday party. However, these gentlemen were not necessarily at that party. They just happened to be at the hotel,” Costello said. “These two events came together and an argument, a disagreement, occurred and spilled out onto the roadway, which ended up in Center Line.”

Investigators believe the groups got into a heated exchange as they left the inn and that the back-and-forth continued as they were driving away. The situation escalated near Van Dyke and Theisen, where the two groups came together.

“There’s a group of people who are at Theisen and Van Dyke. Another group of males also arrives on the scene, and in a very short amount of time, shots are fired,” Costello said. “Four or five shots. Two people are hit. Whether they were the intended targets, we’re still trying to find out.”

One of the men was hit in the lower leg. The other was shot in the shoulder. Neither wound was described as life-threatening.

The investigation remained ongoing at press time July 5.
