MADISON HEIGHTS — A homeless man was killed when he was hit twice by cars while crossing the road in Madison Heights, with the second car dragging him down the road and the driver unaware that the man was trapped underneath until someone flagged her down.

The fatal incident occurred around 9:20 p.m. April 6. The victim has been identified as Rodney Gipson, 59. He was reportedly jaywalking on 12 Mile just west of Dequindre, an area that police say wasn’t well-lit at the time. He was also reportedly wearing dark clothing, which didn’t help visibility.

MACOMB TOWNSHIP — The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office reported that a single-car fatal crash occurred at approximately 9:41 p.m. April 16 on 23 Mile Road west of Heydenreich.

A 27-year-old Troy man was reportedly driving eastbound on 23 Mile at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his 2002 Toyota and struck a telephone pole west of Heydenreich.

The driver, who was the only occupant in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

Berkley Public Safety Department officers were on the scene of a crash Thursday, April 14, in which a vehicle went through the storefront of a nail salon near the intersection of 12 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue.

The incident occurred around 10 a.m. at Great Nails, 28989 Woodward Ave.

According to police and a store owner, there was no one in the salon at the time of the incident, as it was closed.

Berkley officers, as well as Belfor Property Restoration workers, were on the scene of the incident to investigate and provide cleanup for the crash, respectively.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Clinton Township Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a truck and pedestrians that killed one person and injured another.

Around 6 a.m. on April 13, a red Dodge Ram truck was traveling northbound on Gratiot Avenue. The vehicle was driving in the left through lane when the two victims were walking from the east side of Gratiot to the west side, near Capitol Boulevard — about 1 1/2 miles south of Hall Road.

SOUTHFIELD — The Michigan State Police are investigating the cause of a recent fatal freeway crash.

According to a news release from Lt. Calvin Hart, first platoon commander with the MSP, troopers were dispatched to a traffic crash in the left lanes of westbound Interstate 696, between Greenfield Road and Southfield Road, around 10:44 p.m. April 5.

When police arrived at the scene, they determined that a man in his 30s who was driving a Ford Fusion had lost control of his vehicle and struck the rear of a maintenance vehicle contracted by Oakland County.

FARMINGTON HILLS — The Farmington Hills Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that ended the life of a 39-year-old Farmington Hills man April 2 at the intersection of Eight Mile and Tuck.

According to a Farmington Hills Police Department press release, a 37-year-old woman was turning from eastbound Eight Mile Road onto northbound Tuck Road when the Farmington Hills man, traveling westbound on Eight Mile, struck the side of her car.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — A Warren man has been charged for his role in a local February freeway crash that killed a 28-year-old Westland woman.

Stephen Anthony Tate, 23, was formally charged on April 8 after turning himself in, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office reports. He was charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident — when at fault — resulting in death, a 15-year felony; and tampering with evidence, a 10-year felony.

MACOMB TOWNSHIP — At press time, the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office was investigating a single-car crash that occurred around 1 a.m. April 11 near the corner of Porta Marina Drive and Sanborn Drive.

Upon arriving, deputies reportedly found that a 2016 Ford Explorer had crashed and was on its side in the driveway of a home located in the 16800 block of Porta Marina Drive, which is in a residential area east of Garfield Road between 21 Mile Road and 22 Mile Road.

There were two occupants still inside the vehicle when deputies arrived.

MACOMB COUNTY — Macomb County Sheriff’s deputies have stepped up patrols as part of a six-day enforcement campaign targeting distracted drivers.

Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said his office will be adding patrols around the county April 8-13 as they look to keep distracted drivers off the roads; specifically those texting while driving.

Wickersham said the additional patrols are being made possible through a grant by the Office of Highway Safety Planning.

SOUTHFIELD — Authorities are on the lookout for the driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal hit and run in February.

Deputy Chief Nick Loussia said previously in a news release that at around 2:50 a.m. Feb. 23, a woman was walking on westbound Eight Mile Road, between Southfield and Evergreen roads, when she was struck and killed by a vehicle.

After striking the woman, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene southbound on Evergreen Road, south of Eight Mile.

Previously, police did not know the make or model of the vehicle involved in the crash.

A local man suffered no injuries from being struck by a vehicle while attempting to assist at the scene of a traffic crash recently.

Around 8:40 p.m. March 28, Michigan State Police Detroit Regional Dispatch began receiving calls about a multiple-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate-696, west of Greenfield Road, police said. 

According to a news release from Lt. Michael Shaw, of the Michigan State Police, during a preliminary investigation officers discovered that there was a two-car crash blocking the left lane of the freeway.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — Yet another bridge closure in Harrison Township is creating travel headaches for local motorists.

The Jefferson Avenue bridge over the Clinton River spillway between Shook and Crocker was closed to traffic on March 23.

According to Macomb County Department of Roads Director Bob Hoepfner, the closure is another part of ongoing efforts to repair the township’s aged and deteriorating bridges.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — A Chesterfield Township woman was charged with operating while intoxicated second offense and operating while intoxicated causing death hours after her passenger died following a single-vehicle crash early in the morning hours March 24 on Interstate 94.

Ceara Amme Abbott, 20, was allegedly behind the wheel of a 2001 Ford F-150 when officials from the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office said a physical fight erupted between her two female passengers.

Michigan State Police are investigating a crash that shut down Interstate 94 during the afternoon of March 18.

Troopers were sent to eastbound I-94 just east of 11 Mile Road around 12:30 p.m. that day, where the driver told them that road debris went through the windshield and injured the passenger. He also told police that he and the passenger had just purchased heroin in Detroit.

ROSEVILLE — A 14-year-old Roseville teenager is in stable condition after being hit by a car near Common and Glenhurst March 9.

According to Roseville Police Chief James Berlin, the student was leaving Roseville High School when he stepped out in front of an oncoming car on Common, getting hit in the process. The student was transferred to a hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries,” Berlin said, and was in stable condition later that day.

Police said weather was a contributing factor in a serious car crash on Wednesday that closed Rochester Road for about three hours during the morning commute.

Police said a 26-year-old Royal Oak man was transported to William Beaumont Hospital at 7:35 a.m. March 2 following the traffic accident on Rochester Road near Houstonia Avenue.

According to police, the driver was the only person in the car, and he suffered “serious” injuries.

ROYAL OAK — Police confirmed that a 26-year-old Florida man visiting the city was killed early Feb. 27 after he was hit by a train near the intersection of South Main and Sixth streets.

The Royal Oak Fire Department took Hosam Elghannam to William Beaumont Hospital, where he was pronounced dead following the accident.

MACOMB COUNTY/GROSSE POINTES - Michigan State Police troopers and Macomb County Sheriff deputies were involved in a chase of a reportedly stolen U-Haul truck at approximately 1 a.m. Feb. 24.

Lieutenant John Michalke of the Macomb County Sheriff’s department said the chase began on westbound I-94 at 23 Mile Road, and ended on Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe. Michalke said sheriff’s deputies joined the State Police in the chase on I-94 at Hall Road.

WARREN — A 27-year-old Detroit man was killed early Feb. 1 when the Chevy Malibu he was allegedly driving at a high speed on Toepfer, west of Gratiot smashed into another vehicle, hit a tree and was torn in half.

Detective Sgt. Stephen Mills of the Warren Police Department said the Malibu was heading east on Toepfer just before 4 a.m. when it rear-ended a 2013 Hyundai occupied by two Warren residents.
