1. Royal Oak Symphony Orchestra
Friday, Dec. 20 • Royal Oak Middle School, Royal Oak

The Royal Oak Symphony Orchestra will perform a holiday concert at 8 p.m. at Royal Oak Middle School, 709 N. Washington Ave. in Royal Oak. Pre-concert entertainment will be provided by the Gentlemen Songsters. Tickets cost $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and college students, and are free for kids under age 18. 2. ‘The Christmas Story’ concert
Sunday, Dec. 22 • Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, Grosse Pointe Farms

The choir at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, 16 Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe Farms, will present the annual “The Christmas Story” concert at 5 p.m. Dec. 22.

The free, hourlong concert will feature handbells, strings, woodwinds, harp and organ along with the choir, as well as carols for audience participation. The centerpiece is a presentation of James Biery’s original “The Christmas Story,” a musical rendition of the birth of Jesus.

3. An old-fashioned Christmas
Saturday, Dec. 21 • Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farms, Rochester Hills

The Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm, 1005 Van Hoosen Road in Rochester Hills, will host an old-fashioned Christmas celebration noon-3 p.m.

The event will feature a model train display, musical entertainment, theater groups, crafts, snacks and even chestnuts roasting on an open fire.

The cost in advance is $5 for museum members and $8 for nonmembers. Admission costs $10 on the day of the event.

4. Santa’s Rock N Lights
Friday-Sunday, Dec. 20-22 • Red Oaks Waterpark, Madison Heights

Santa’s Rock N Lights is located in the parking lot of the Red Oaks Waterpark  at 1455 E. 13 Mile Road. The drive-thru show features tens of thousands of displays, and more than 1,000 animated elements that move in sync with holiday music that plays in each car by tuning the radio to a specific station listed at the event.

A portion of the proceeds benefits local charities. The cost is $25 per vehicle. Vehicles can be up to 8 feet tall with up to six people. Additional passengers cost $5 each. The hours are Sundays to Thursdays from 4:50 to 9 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from 4:50 to 10 p.m. The show will continue through Dec. 31.

5. Detroit Zoo Wild Lights
Friday-Sunday, Dec. 20-22 • Detroit Zoo, Royal Oak

The Detroit Zoo’s Wild Lights display runs 29 nights. If features more than five million LED lights illuminating trees, buildings and 280 sculptures.

Additional holiday entertainment and special activities will be ongoing, and various packages are also available. Prices vary. Children younger than 2 are admitted free. Parking is $8 per car.
