MOUNT CLEMENS — One man has been arrested and charged, but Macomb County Sheriff’s investigators are still looking for a second man allegedly involved in the Feb. 21 fatal stabbing of a 22-year-old Mount Clemens man.

Very few details are being released as to what led to the murder or who wielded the weapon that killed Alexander William Burkart.

Lt. John Michalke said using video surveillance from a Mount Clemens business, deputies were able to identify the two suspects who were in an alleged altercation with Burkart, which led to the stabbing.

Michalke confirmed that Burkart was delivering a pizza when he was likely ambushed and stabbed. He then drove himself from the scene before crashing his vehicle.

One of those suspects, identified as Deandre Lee Arnold, 18, of Mount Clemens, was arrested Feb. 22, and arraigned in 41-B District Court in Clinton Township on Feb. 23 and charged with homicide felony murder. At press time he was being held without bond in the Macomb County Jail.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office also issued an arrest warrant for the second suspect, Jayvon Tarice Cates, 18. Cates is described as 5 feet 10 inches and 150 pounds.

Michalke said he is unable to release details as to what was captured in the surveillance recording or what Arnold has said to investigators. He had yet to obtain an attorney at press time.

Arnold’s next court date is March 9.

“He was interviewed the night of the incident and made some comments that led to his arrest,” said Michalke.

According to Sheriff Anthony Wickersham, deputies were called to a location behind Spear’s Cleaners at 178 northbound Gratiot at 8:18 p.m. on Feb. 21 in response to a single-vehicle crash behind the establishment.

At the scene, deputies observed a 2003 Dodge pickup truck had struck a utility pole. Burkart was alone behind the wheel with a stab wound to his chest.

A crime report states that deputies administered first aid until the arrival of EMS, at which time the victim was transported to McLaren Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Anyone with information on Cates or the incident is asked to call the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office at (586) 307-9412.
