Summer months offer plenty of cruisin’ chances

METRO DETROIT — The hum of engines across metro Detroit promises to be a familiar sound of summer as communities hold their annual classic car and auto events.

Although the Woodward Dream Cruise, which is scheduled this year for Aug. 15, is known as the largest classic car event in the area, auto events in Shelby Township, Roseville, Grosse Pointe Shores and Eastpointe will take place in June, and others will occur in August.

Lois Kline, secretary and treasurer of the Cruisin’ Gratiot board, said her June 20 cruise in Eastpointe is not affiliated with the Roseville Gratiot Cruise, which is happening that same day in Roseville.

Kline said Cruisin’ Gratiot extends along Gratiot Avenue from 10 Mile Road to 8 Mile Road. Although cars will be on display at different parking lots and restaurants throughout the week, she said the main affiliated car show takes place June 20 at East Detroit High School in Eastpointe.

Kline said the event typically draws an estimated 150,000 people in attendance. She also said WDIV-TV Channel 4’s Lauren Podell is scheduled to be the event’s grand marshal.

“Every place in Eastpointe mainly has a tent and something set up, and they do their own thing,” she said. “They have a band and cook food. It’s just a whole ball of wax we’re having.”

Kline also said the event designates a cruising lane just for classic car drivers who want to cruise.

“People have all kind of tents set up the night before so they can mark their spot (and watch),” she added.

Heidi McInnes, president of the Shorewood Kiwanis Club in St. Clair Shores, said this year celebrates 100 years of Kiwanis’ existence since the time it was initially founded in Detroit. But she said the Harper Charity Cruise, which runs on Harper Avenue in St. Clair Shores, is shaping up to be a very special event for its own reasons.

“It’s the only 100 percent charity-driven cruise in this area,” she said. “It also has a very family-friendly feel to it. The attendees can get really up close and personal (to the vehicles).”
