St. Clair Shores police are investigating the deaths of a man and a woman after receiving multiple reports of a body in Lake St. Clair near 12 Mile Road.

Detective Sgt. Matt McCallister said that the body of a white man was found off the coast of Champine Park around 1:22 p.m. Sept. 6.

St. Clair Shores Police and St. Clair Shores Fire personnel worked to remove the body from the water and transport it to the Macomb County Medical Examiner’s Office.

According to a press release from the St. Clair Shores Police Department, a vehicle was found nearby that was registered to a man matching the physical description of the body found in the water. When police went to his address, on 12 Mile Road east of Harper Avenue, they discovered the body of a woman inside the home.

The Michigan State Police Crime Lab arrived at the home to assist with the investigation around 9:30 p.m. Sept. 6.

Neighbors said that the man who lived in the house was older and had just been in the hospital after Labor Day.

“They kind of stuck to themselves,” said Mike Sayig. Nevertheless, he said the couple were “good neighbors.”

“I talked to him last week after he got out of the hospital,” said Andy Saldana. “I don’t know what happened after that.”

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Marine Division and United States Coast Guard assisted with the investigation in the water.

Police are not releasing the names of the man or the woman, or any other information, until their identities have been positively confirmed and family members notified.

St. Clair Shores Police said the investigation is continuing and anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Police Department at (586) 445-5300 or the Detective Bureau at (586) 445-5305.
