ST. CLAIR SHORES — A 48-year-old man in the 20000 block of Chalon Street was killed the afternoon of Feb. 25 when his Jeep rolled on top of him.

St. Clair Shores police said that the man arrived home at around 2 p.m. Feb. 25, but high winds that day had blown his trash across the driveway.

Detective Lt. Gary Crandall said that the accident was captured on home surveillance video.

“He stopped his vehicle ... walked to the driveway to pick up his trash, and the car then started rolling forward,” Crandall said. “It was a Jeep (and it) nudged him. He stood up, tried to get out of the way, but he tripped, it looked like, on the garbage. The car rolled on top of him. He was pinned under the car.”

Crandall said that the man died from suffocation as the vehicle rolled on top of his shoulder and came to a stop on top of him on the easement between the street and the sidewalk.

No one saw the incident until about 15 minutes later, when a bicyclist rode by and called the police.

“Officers had to put (the vehicle) into neutral to pull the car off. It was just a tragic accident. The absolute worst-case scenario,” Crandall said Feb. 28.
