DETROIT — It will be an evening of comedy, philanthropy and delicious food.

On May 29, the Guild of St. John Hospital and Medical Center will again gather to assist the hospital’s mission.

The guild members will hold their 59th annual dinner at the MGM Grand Casino Detroit, 1777 Third Street. Proceeds from the event will support the Surgical and Pediatrics Services Expansion Project at Ascension St. John Hospital, 22101 Moross Road. This year’s chair is Sean Lane; vice chair is Andrew Cracchiolo.

Cocktail hours will begin at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m. WDIV Channel 4 news anchor Priya Mann will keep things moving as master of ceremonies. This year’s event also will feature stand-up comedian and actor Sinbad, who will begin serving up laughs at 9 p.m.

“This is his third time coming to our event,” Lane said of Sinbad. “He’s been tried and true. Our audience loves him.”

Tickets for the yearly event can be purchased online at the guild’s website,, or by telephone at (313) 820-3475.

“Tickets are available, but they’re moving fast,” said Lane, of Grosse Pointe Farms. “We’re going to have a great dinner. Everyone is welcome. I hope to see everyone there.”

Lane said he’d like this year’s event to raise $500,000. While the event supports the hospital and its staff and patients, it also brings together doctors, medical staff, donors, administrators, nurses and community members for an evening of camaraderie. When the show is over, it’s typical for guests to try their luck at the casino, stay the night at the hotel or visit the Detroit Athletic Club.

Organizers at this year’s dinner will recognize others with ties to Ascension St. John who have made a difference in the community. This year’s honorees will include Dr. Cheryl Wesen, Physician of the Year; Realtor Alex Lucido, who is receiving a lifetime achievement award; and Peter Cracchiolo, who will receive the Sister Verenice McQuade Distinguished Service Award.

Each year, the guild selects a different project to support. Ideas come from medical staff members who provide the guild with a wish list of items that would benefit the hospital.

Last year, for example, proceeds were designated to purchase five multiperformance mobile surgical beds at the medical center. Proceeds from the 2017 event were allocated for the St. John Hospital and Medical Center hub renovation.

Sinbad, who is also playing the MGM Grand Detroit May 30, has been making people laugh professionally for more than 30 years, including on television and in film. His movie credits include “Jingle All the Way” and “Good Burger.”

The guild has raised approximately $18 million for the hospital over the years. The guild also sponsors other events throughout the year in support of the hospital.
