SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Shelby Township was ranked in the top 50 safest Michigan communities, according to SafeWise in its release of the seventh annual “50 Safest Cities in Michigan” report for 2021.

To identify the safest cities in Michigan, SafeWise said it reviewed the most recent FBI crime report statistics and census population data. The evaluation is based on the number of reported violent crimes in each community. If there was a tie, SafeWise also factored in the number of property crimes. SafeWise calculated the rate of crimes per 1,000 people in each city.

Shelby Township was ranked No. 44 in the 2021 report, which was four spots higher than last year.

According to SafeWise, the violent crime rate in Michigan dropped from 4.5 crimes per 1,000 people to 4.4, while property crimes declined from 16.5 per 1,000 people to 15.9 in 2021.

The top three safest cities in Michigan, according to the site, were Thetford Township, Spring Arbor Township and Grosse Ile Township.

Shelby Township Deputy Police Chief Mark Coil said that Shelby Township was ranked in the top 50 safest Michigan communities because of the people who make the township a safe place to live.

“They are the reason we are, and have consistently been, a top 50 safest communities to live in Michigan — people who tirelessly dedicate themselves to protecting and serving over 80,000 residents and businesses daily. Police officers, firemen and dispatchers are the people who (are) willing (to) protect and defend all those who live, work and frequent this amazing community,” Coil said via email.

He said, however, it is more than just these public safety personnel who allow the township to make this list year after year.

“As the largest community in the top 50, it speaks volumes to the quality of people that live and work here. We the people of Shelby Township, working and living together, make this a special place, filled with the finest quality of people anywhere,” said Coil.

He said it’s an honor and privilege to serve the people of Shelby Township.

Shelby Township Supervisor Rick Stathakis agreed with Coil and said these rankings prove what they had always known, and that the people who live and work in the township are what make it a safe community.

“Shelby Township is the safest place to live, learn and do business in Macomb County. We are very proud of the amazing police officers and firefighters that protect our citizens and property. We’re even more proud that we can support these brave men and women with the training, equipment and staffing that they need while maintaining the county’s lowest local millage rate among full-service communities that staff and manage full-time police and fire departments,” he said.
