SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A member of the Shelby Township Fine Art Society has been honored as artist of the month.

Patti Connors, a longtime member and the program director of the Shelby Township Fine Art Society, has been honored as artist of the month for September and October. Several of her art pieces currently are on display and for sale at the Shelby Township Activities Center.

She has 20 paintings hanging there and decided to go with a theme, “Through the Seasons,” so she has paintings that depict each of the seasons.

She began painting after retiring from Utica Community Schools, where she worked for 32 years. Her artwork contains some themes show up more than others.

“I enjoy painting all types of subjects, but various areas of nature, landscape and flowers usually tend to surface. In harmony with my passion for painting are my other hobbies of gardening and traveling (the paints always come along). … These offer a rich palette of objects from which to choose,” she said in an email interview.

“Watercolor is my favorite medium because it offers a beautiful surprise dance of color as it flows along the paper,” she said.

She often makes greeting cards from her paintings.

“For the past 15 Christmases, I have sent my family and friends greeting cards which are copies of my holiday paintings,” she said.

She said art comes in many forms: music, dance, writing and visualization.

“All artists love to share their passion. Being chosen as the featured artist provides for a wonderful opportunity to do just that. It is no wonder that the word ‘art’ is part of the word ‘heart.’ Painting allows me time for solitude and (to) experience a peacefulness and fulfillment from the depths of my heart.

Connors lives with her husband, Pete, in Shelby Township, where they raised two children.

“Pete, my husband, is very supportive of our art club. He comes to help with all of the hangings of our art in various places,” she said.

Pete said Patti paints a beautiful picture each year that they use as their Christmas card for family and friends.

“They all save them, and many often frame her cards for their homes. Sometimes, the painted picture is from our travels and provides us with a great memory. Patti rotates her lovely art in our home with the seasons to provide us with a new and fun view of the outside, inside,” he said via email.

He said their kids and grandkids love to come over and see what new ideas are being expressed in her artwork.

“Hanging Patti’s art at the Shelby Activity Center was easy because she had it all laid out at home exactly as she envisioned it, and then took pictures of it, so it was a snap to put it up there. Our family and friends enjoy watching Patti’s beautiful creations come to life, and they are sometimes gifted with their favorite, he said.

Fu-Yuan Ciricola, who has been volunteering with the Shelby Township featured artist program since 2012, said it’s an honor and a pleasure to work with talented artists.

“They provide our community with the opportunity to appreciate watercolor, acrylic, pastel and oil paintings. The program runs for two months for each artist. Their artwork is displayed and for sale at the Shelby Township Activity Center, located at 14975 21 Mile Road. We are pleased to have her showing her watercolor paintings through her unique ‘Four Seasons’ presentation,” said Ciricola.

Anyone interested in cards or prints of her paintings can call (586) 739-4433.
