MACOMB TOWNSHIP — Plenty of children will now have gifts to open this Christmas thanks to Toys for Tots.

Locally, one business that took part in the collection of gifts was Russ Milne Ford, at the corner of Hall and Gratiot roads in Macomb Township.

This year marked the fifth time the car dealership participated in Toys for Tots, and sales manager Bill Cate said it was by, far the largest collection of toys its ever had.

“It’s hard to count the number of toys that were collected,” Cate said. “We have an entire pickup truck full of gifts, as well as five or six boxes around it.”

The collection ran from Nov. 5 to Dec. 15. The gifts were picked up on Dec. 17.

“In addition to the huge donation of toys, we also had a donation of nine bicycles, six of which were from a local company,” Cate said. “We would like to thank everyone that donated to this worthy cause. It will help many children have a merry Christmas.”

Cate believes that 2018 was a better year financially for many, which led to a larger collection of toys.

“We had an employee dress-down day every Friday where they could either give money for Toys for Tots and we’d buy toys or they could bring in a toy,” he said. “We had a lot of employees participate and a lot of customers that brought them in. This year far surpassed last year.”

Prior to its involvement in Toys for Tots, Russ Milne Ford collected gifts and money which would be distributed to one local family.

“We saw the possibility of getting a lot more contributions by going with the Toys for Tots program,” Cate said.

Toys for Tots is run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve, which distributes new unwrapped toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas.

The Toys for Tots website states its primary goal is, through the gift of a new toy, help bring the joy of Christmas and send a message of hope to America’s less fortunate children.
