ROYAL OAK — Summer is officially here, and organizers are hoping for a sunshiny, dry weekend July 6 and 7 for the 49th annual Royal Oak Outdoor Art Fair at Memorial Park.

The juried event will showcase almost 100 artists from Michigan and around the country selling original artwork in a variety of mediums, including ceramics, painting, prints, fiber arts, jewelry, photography, sculpture, wood, glass, leather goods and mixed media.

Fair hours will be 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, July 6, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, July 7.

Besides rows of artists’ tents, the fair will also offer live music, including The T-Bone Paxton Quartet and Jarrod Champion; and food vendors, including the Treat Dreams ice cream truck, freshly squeezed lemonade, and grilled hot dogs and sausages.

“We’ve got a really great mix of artists,” said Jay Anderson, president of the Royal Oak Arts Council. “We had a lot of new artists last year, and even more new artists this year.”

He said the event is an ideal destination for the whole family and that what makes the Royal Oak Outdoor Art Fair unique is that it is situated in an idyllic green space.

“We have room for the artists to spread out. They’re not crammed into a corner on a cement 10-by-10 space,” Anderson said. “Many are in the shade, and the park is a really nice place to just go have a walk, plus add the art fair and live music.”

In the past, he said, organizers have been fortunate with the weather, and he hopes their luck will continue this year.

John Fedele, Royal Oak superintendent of recreation, said the art fair continues to grow and enjoy success as a well-known destination for returning patrons and artists alike.

“It’s just a great event,” he said. “It’s outdoors in the park. A lot of families can come out and enjoy the park and enjoy the art fair at the same time too.”

The event generally draws about 10,000 people over the course of the weekend.

“It’s very large and popular,” Fedele said.

He added that no dogs and no alcohol are allowed.

The Royal Oak Outdoor Art Fair is co-sponsored by the Royal Oak Arts Council and the Royal Oak Recreation Department.

Memorial Park is located at 31050 Woodward Ave., at the corner of Woodward Avenue and 13 Mile Road.
