A 32-year-old Roseville man died when his car hit a tree during the early hours of Dec. 17.

According to a press release from the Roseville Police Department, officers responded to a report of a one-car crash at 12 Mile Road and Congress at 1:17 a.m.

Shane Michael Caughey, of Roseville, was the sole person involved in the crash, police said. His 2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo reportedly had left the roadway traveling westbound on 12 Mile Road and struck a tree.

“Despite having been wearing his seatbelt, (Caughey) had suffered massive traumatic injuries and had passed away as a result,” the release, written by Police Chief James Berlin, said.

As of Dec. 17, investigators believed that Caughey had lost control of his vehicle for an unknown reason and traveled about 20 feet off the roadway before striking the tree. Police believed that the Monte Carlo was traveling in excess of 70 mph in a 45 mph area.

The investigation was continuing; the press release said that police believed high speed and alcohol consumption were the causes of the crash.
