Prep for Paczki Day by pre-ordering

With Fat Tuesday approaching on Feb. 28, it’s time to start perfecting your paczki plan.

Crowds will be lining up at popular Polish bakeries not only in Hamtramck, but all over southeast Michigan to get their hands on this decadent pastry, which is similar to a jelly doughnut, but made with with richer dough and packed with more filling.

The best way to make sure you don’t miss out on the once-a-year treat is to order your paczki ahead of time. Here’s a list of just a few metro Detroit locations that are taking paczki pre-orders.

• New Palace Bakery
9833 Joseph Campau St., Hamtramck •

Hamtramck’s New Palace Bakery opens at 3 a.m. on Fat Tuesday, but you can order in advance by calling (313) 875-1334.

The bakery offers traditional paczki fillings like custard and fruit, along with specialty fillings like caramel cream, rosehip, and cookies and cream. Some even have multiple fillings, like the “Hamtramck Boat” — filled with banana custard, strawberry and pineapple, and then covered in milk chocolate — or the red, white and blue “United Paczki,” filled with strawberry, custard and blueberry. New fillings for 2017 are peanut butter and chocolate, and peanut butter and jelly.

• American Polish Cultural Center
2975 E. Maple Road, Troy •

The American Polish Cultural Center is offering paczki pre-orders for $15 per dozen by calling (248) 689-3636.

The center will also have paczki available for purchase on-site beginning Thursday, Feb. 23. The official sale will be 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, and from 6 a.m. until the paczki are gone on Tuesday, Feb. 28. The sale will also feature live accordion music by Gary Kolody noon-6 p.m. on Tuesday.

• The Home Bakery
300 S. Main St., Rochester •

The Home Bakery offers both pickup and delivery options for its paczki pre-orders. Packzi cost $2.25 each or $25 for a baker's dozen. Orders can be made online at or by calling (248) 651-4830.

All orders require 24 hours to complete, and delivery orders must be made by midnight on Sunday, Feb. 26. Customers can choose to have the paczki delivered on either Monday, Feb. 27, or Tuesday, Feb. 28. The bakery delivers to more than 100 cities, and delivery costs $18, no matter the quantity. Flavors include apple, blueberry-lemon, buttercream, cassata, coconut cream, chocolate, custard, lemon, lime curd-raspberry and “Kronutczki.”

• Verace Pasta e Olio
31347 Harper Ave., St. Clair Shores •

Verace Pasta e Olio prides itself on its handmade, all-natural paczki made with real fruit, real cream and imported European flour.

“The dough is light and airy,” said owner Cas Chirco. “You could eat a dozen and not know it.”

This year’s flavors include cannoli cream, strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, lemon and custard. The store typically sells more than 100 dozen each year, so pre-orders are advised. Call (586) 690-7444 to place an order.

• Golden Donuts
34155 Harper Ave., Clinton Township •

Golden Donuts, which dubs itself “paczki headquarters,” will have paczki for sale starting Saturday, Feb. 25. The bakery will be open 24 hours from Monday, Feb. 27, to Tuesday, Feb. 28, closing around 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

Golden Donuts is only taking pre-orders for 10 dozen or more. Call (586) 791-7222 to place an order.

• Peteet’s Famous Cheesecakes
13835 W. 9 Mile Road, Oak Park • 6548 Orchard Lake Road, West Bloomfield •

Peteet’s Famous Cheesecakes offers a new spin on the traditional pastry with its cheesecake infused paczki. Flavors include custard, lemon, raspberry, strawberry, blueberry, apple and margarita. The bakeries open at 6 a.m. on Fat Tuesday.

• The American-Polish Century Club’s Century Banquet Center
33204 Maple Lane Dr., Sterling Heights •

The American-Polish Century Club’s deadline for pre-orders has passed, but the club will have mixed dozens of paczki available during its Paczki Day Celebration beginning at noon Feb. 28 at the Century Banquet Center. The event will also offer Polish music by live bands, dancing, a cash bar and Polish favorites, like pierogi and kielbasa.

• The Donut Hole

According to its Facebook page, the Donut Hole is accepting pre-orders for two dozen or more. In addition, the bakery will be making paczki “fresh and ‘round the clock” Monday, Feb. 27 through Tuesday, Feb. 28.
