Police investigating fatal crash in St. Clair Shores

ST. CLAIR SHORES — A traffic crash that left a husband and wife dead is under investigation by the St. Clair Shores Police Department.

St. Clair Shores Police Traffic Lt. Joseph Heythaler said that around 2:17 p.m. Feb. 3, there was a head-on collision between two vehicles on Jefferson Avenue, just north of Masonic Boulevard, that immediately killed a 76-year-old husband and wife.

Heythaler said that the couple lived in St. Clair Shores, but police would not release any further information as of press time Feb. 7.

A Ram truck was traveling northbound on the road at the same time the Chevrolet Impala being driven by the couple was heading south.

“It appears the driver of the pickup went left of center, into oncoming traffic, striking the other vehicle,” Heythaler said. “The driver and passenger of the Chevy Impala were both deceased at the scene.”

The driver of the truck, a 29-year-old St. Clair Shores man, was taken to a local hospital for injuries sustained in the crash and for possible other medical problems, Heythaler said.

“At this time, it is not known if alcohol or narcotics was a factor. That is still ongoing and we’re waiting for toxicology,” he said Feb. 4.

Police have not identified the driver.

The crash remains under investigation, and police are looking for witnesses. Anyone who saw the accident is asked to call the Traffic Bureau at (586) 445-5318.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, which shut down the roadway for a few hours while police investigated. There were no other passengers in the vehicles.
