WEST BLOOMFIELD — When it comes to telling jokes and making others laugh, a police officer might not immediately come to mind.

West Bloomfield Deputy Police Chief Curtis Lawson wants to banish the perception that officers in law enforcement are all straight-laced.

Comedy for a Cause will be just the place to let loose, in a lawful and orderly manner, of course, 6:30-9 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Berman Center for the Performing Arts, 6600 W. Maple Road.

The event is put on by the nonprofit West Bloomfield Police Foundation and will feature Mike the Cop, who has a big following on YouTube. He will also emcee the event.

According to an email from Lawson, Mike the Cop has made it his priority to “humanize the badge” while providing plenty of hilarity.

Mike the Cop will be joined by Jason Colthorp, a WDIV Detroit news anchor, and comedian Vinnie Montez to help raise money for the Police Foundation.

The West Bloomfield Police Foundation has raised thousands of dollars to help officers and their families who may be in need of help.

Lawson, CEO of the West Bloomfield Police Foundation, said that there is a team of 12 individuals on the foundation who are putting on the fourth annual event. The first event was a musical show, as was the one held two years ago.

Last year’s event was a comedy show.

“We’ve sold out every year,” he said, adding that the highlight of the evening is the live auction.

Well-known native Detroiter Antonio “Shades” Agee’s personalized artwork from his canvas will be up for auction.

The event is partnering with the West Bloomfield Parks and Recreation Commission and Maddog Technology, both entities that Lawson said are longtime supporters of the West Bloomfield Police Foundation.

Tickets cost $20 and include a strolling dinner.

Jennifer Tucker, executive director of the West Bloomfield Parks and Recreation Commission, said that the event is a great partnership with the West Bloomfield Police Foundation.

“We basically know how to put events on, and they (the Police Foundation) have a fantastic cause and needed to work on some fundraising, and we kind of put our heads together,” she said.

Tucker added that the event is getting really close to its goal for ticket sales. There are a total of 300 tickets.

“This year, it should be fantastic,” she said.

Cristina Koziarski, president of the Police Foundation, said in an email that the event will be fun for all.

“It’s astounding that all these great people come together for such a meaningful cause,” she said. “The West Bloomfield Police Foundation has grown from supporting WB officers and their families to helping surrounding departments, and now really reaching out to give back to the community.”

Koziarski added that the Police Foundation gives scholarships to students, adopts families in need, takes part in annual holiday events and more.

Lawson said that the whole purpose of the foundation is to help people who are a little less fortunate — local families, students and the families of fallen officers.

“I think it’s going to be a great event,” he said, adding that the community and businesses have stepped up to donate.

“We keep getting better each and every year,” Koziarski said.
