UTICA — The holidays are approaching quickly, and the Utica Public Library has ideas for gifts.

The library will be hosting a bake sale and an ornament decorating event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 8. The bake sale will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

During the library event, patrons can decorate ornaments and buy some Christmas baked goods to take home for themselves or as a gift.

With Christmas just around the corner, the library thought a festive event was a way to bring people together and celebrate, all while helping to build the library’s DVD collection for residents.

The bake sale will feature home-baked cookies, candies, fudge and many more goodies.

“Our holiday bake sale is one of our favorite events of the year. We have wonderful volunteer bakers, including the entire library staff, who not only bake the most delicious treats, but also package their items beautifully; if you’re buying for gift giving, many items are already packaged and ready to give. Proceeds from the bake sale are used to help fund the DVD collection, so patrons can buy knowing that they’re also helping us enlarge one of our most popular collections,” said Marsha Doege, the Utica Public Library director.

Ornament decorating will last an hour longer than the bake sale and is open to people of all ages.

“I have a few different types of ornaments, as to reach all ages and skill levels. We will have various Christmas crafting supplies to give people a chance to really get creative,” said Katherine Francis, the library’s children’s services coordinator.

All supplies for the craft, including the ornament, will be provided by the library for participants to decorate any way they wish. Creating an ornament is free.

“Adding the ornament decorating seems (to be) the perfect way to expand the bake sale and offer our patrons a fun, free Christmas activity the whole family can enjoy,” Doege said.

Both the ornament decorating and the bake sale will be held in the Gibbing Room in the library’s lower level.

The event does not require registration and is open to all.
