Pedestrian killed on Gratiot in Clinton Township

CLINTON TOWNSHIP — The Clinton Township Police Department is investigating a fatal traffic crash involving a pedestrian and a pickup truck.   

The crash occurred around 9:54 p.m. June 8 on northbound Gratiot Avenue near Grandy Street. Police have identified the victim as a 58-year-old male from Clinton Township. As of press time, the name of the victim is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.  

The driver was identified as a 39-year-old from Chesterfield Township.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was walking eastbound in the roadway in the left lane,” a press release states. “The silver Ford 2012 F-150 was driving northbound on Gratiot and struck the pedestrian when he walked into its path.”

Police say the driver immediately stopped and along with another bystander performed CPR until police and medical personnel arrived. 

The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.  

Authorities note that alcohol/drugs may have been a factor in the crash for the pedestrian, while the driver showed no signs of intoxication and passed all field sobriety tests.

The release indicates that the crash occurred in a well lit section of Gratiot Avenue, north of Grandy Street. In that area, Gratiot has a posted speed limit of 45 MPH. A crosswalk is located within a quarter of a mile.
