FARMINGTON HILLS— Selling 2,015 cookies in about a month might make some crack under pressure, but not East Middle School eighth-grader and Girl Scout Cadette Nyia George, who set this mark as a personal goal this year.

“I usually don’t sell that much, just sell to family and friends, but I wanted to go a little bit bigger,” the pint-size Farmington Hills resident said. “You can sell as many as you please.”

Last year, Nyia sold 750 boxes of cookies; the year before that, she had 880 of the delectable treats under her belt.

ROCHESTER — A 78-year-old Air Force veteran who left high school to fight for his country recently received his diploma from the Rochester Community Schools district.

“Sixty years ago, in 1954, an 11th-grader from Rochester High School left high school to serve in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict,” said Lori Grein, RCS director of community relations. “Three years later, in 1957, he earned his general education development credential, otherwise known as the GED. However, he never received his diploma.”

FRASER — An old military credo states, “Freedom has a flavor the protected will never know.”

With American patriotism revving up for Veterans Day, a group of local VFW members want to keep liberty alive in the community they call home.

After receiving confirmation from Fraser Mayor Doug Hagerty and the city’s Department of Public Works, representatives of Fraser VFW Post 6691 — located near Garfield and 14 Mile roads — decided to beautify a World War II memorial that sits at Fraser City Hall.
