ST. CLAIR SHORES — A runner exercising in the area called for help just after 5 a.m. Oct. 14 after spotting a house on fire in the 23000 block of Recreation Street.

Fire Chief James Piper said responders from all three stations in St. Clair Shores as well as help from Roseville arrived to find a single-story ranch home “pretty well involved.” But luckily, he said, because of modern firefighting technology and how many gallons of water per minute firefighters could spray at the blaze, “the crews got a good knock down.”

The common areas of the home had all caught fire, but no one was home at the time, Piper said.

Firefighters still searched the home for victims just to be sure, even though they had information that potentially there was no one home at the time.

“Especially at that time of morning, we always want to be on the safe side,” he said. “We managed to get it knocked down and nobody hurt, so another successful morning in the Shores.”

St. Clair Shores Police are assisting in the investigation due to fire inspector training, Piper said, and the investigation was still ongoing at press time. The fire was pretty extensive, he said, and investigators had to wait for it to cool down before beginning their inspections. There was no damage to any neighboring houses and no firefighters sustained any injuries while fighting the fire.

“We’re starting at step one and going through, trying to figure out the cause,” he said.
