UTICA — Are you looking for a way to give back this holiday season and also have a good time? Maybe you need some goodies to use as gifts for the holidays?

The Utica Public Library is kicking off the holidays with an opportunity to give back and also have some cheerful fun.

“This year we are continuing our bake sale and ornament decorating event (on) the second Saturday in December. This year, is the first year we have decided to sell gently used scarves, purses and jewelry alongside our yummy homemade baked desserts,” said Katherine Francis, the children’s services coordinator at the Utica Public Library, said in an email.

The library is accepting donations of purses, bags, scarves and jewelry — all in good condition.

The library will be selling the gently used items at bargain prices during its bake sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 14.

“If you’ve got a closet full of bags and scarves you never use anymore, or a jewelry box overflowing with items that you’re tired of, then we’re the place to take it!” Marsha Doege, the director of the Utica Public Library, said in an email.

Donations will be accepted at the library no later than Friday, Dec. 13. Items can be dropped off at the library during regular library hours.

“Donations can be dropped off at the library anytime; if after hours, they can put small items in the media return box,” said Francis.

Proceeds from this fundraiser will be used for the library’s DVD collection.

The bake sale will include goodies like brownies, fudge, buckeyes and several different kinds of cookies.

“Since everything is home-baked and donated, we often don’t know until the goodies arrive, but we always have breads like banana and zucchini — all beautifully packaged,” said Doege.

Proceeds from the bake sale also will be used for the DVD collection.

“Our annual bake sale helps to fund our DVD collection, which is one of our most popular collections, so we are always looking for more ways to increase the revenue,” said Doege.

During the bake sale, the library also will be hosting its annual ornament decorating craft program from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. — one ornament per person, while supplies last.

“As we did last year, we’re having our bake sale overlap our ornament decorating craft, both of which were very successful last season. We hope by adding additional items, we’ll make it even better!” said Doege.

There will be a variety of different ornaments to be made.

Both the bake sale and the ornament decorating will be held in the Gibbing Room.

The ornament decorating craft is a free drop-in event for the whole family; children can decorate an ornament to give as a gift or to keep. All supplies are free, but donations are always gratefully accepted.

The Utica Public Library is located at 7530 Auburn Road. For more information on the donations or event, call (586) 731- 4141.
