MACOMB COUNTY — Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel recently appointed a new director of the Macomb County Office of Senior Services.

It was revealed Sept. 4 that Sheila Cote will serve as the director of the Macomb County Office of Senior Services, a department that provides assistance to senior citizens.

Cote previously worked for Macomb County Community Mental Health, where she was the director of community behavioral health.

“Sheila’s experience working with specialized populations will be an incredible asset as we look to create a more dynamic system of services for Macomb County’s senior citizens,” Hackel stated. “I am confident that she will be a strong leader that brings creativity and passion to the director role.”

Cote has worked for Macomb County Community Mental Health since 1988 and has held a variety of leadership positions throughout her 30-year tenure.

“Inclusion of seniors as active members in our community, as well as supporting them to remain living in their homes and participate in community activities, is essential to our county as a whole,” she said. “Our ‘distinguished’ population has much to offer and contribute. I would like to tap into their wealth of knowledge and life experience to better our community.”

Most recently, Cote oversaw grant writing and operations for children and family services, crisis services, and same-day open-access mental health services. Her certifications include a master’s degree in social work from Wayne State University and multiple accreditations as a clinical social worker with the state of Michigan.

As specified by the Macomb County charter, the county executive has the authority to appoint department directors. This appointment must be confirmed by the Board of Commissioners.
