MOUNT CLEMENS — It’s early in the season and in his tenure, but new Mount Clemens High football coach Marcus Cribbs looks to have the program on track for a comeback.

In its 38-0 win over Detroit University Prep Science and Math Sept. 13 at home, the Bathers moved to 3-0 on the season. It’s the team’s best start since 1997. The team, which has outscored opponents 108-0, has struggled in recent years. To put that into perspective, one more win and Mount Clemens matches the program’s win total from 2015 to 2018.

Before this season, Mount Clemens had three total shutouts the last 10 seasons.

Cribbs, who played at Ferris State University, said he believed instantly the team had the talent to compete.

“We’ve just been working hard and the guys have bought into what the coaches are teaching,” Cribbs said after the Sept. 13 win. “There’s always been good players here. We’re just doing what we have to do to put them in position to win.”

Bathers senior quarterback Don Williams continued his strong play with a big night. Williams in the game recorded 325 total yards and five touchdowns. The Mount Clemens quarterback notched three touchdown runs of at least 50 yards. He has 12 touchdowns on the season.

“When I run the ball, I just see what the coaches say is going to be there,” said Williams, a four-year varsity player. “This the most fun I’ve had playing football at Mount Clemens. Everybody on the team wants to be here. We’re working hard. Hopefully we can keep this going.”

Mount Clemens next game is against Warren Michigan Collegiate at 7 p.m. Sept. 21 at Madison Heights Bishop Foley.

University Prep Science and Math will look for its first win of the season when it faces Ecorse High at 4 p.m. Sept. 20 at home.
