HARPER WOODS — The Michigan State Police is investigating a fatal shooting that investigators believe occurred on or near Interstate 94.

According to the Michigan State Police, authorities received a call at 3:05 p.m. Sept. 9 about a possible shooting on I-94, near Eight Mile Road, and a red vehicle that was seen leaving the area. The Michigan State Police said that witnesses reported a male driver exiting a red vehicle at the nearby intersection of Peerless Avenue and Roscommon Street in Harper Woods.

A passenger with one gunshot wound was found in the vehicle by first responders, and Michigan State Police officials said the passenger was transported to a nearby hospital. Westbound I-94 at 10 Mile Road temporarily was closed as detectives investigated and tried to locate the crime scene. Two different caliber shell casings were recovered by state troopers.

Michigan State Police reported Sept. 10 that the passenger died.

The MSP announced on Sept. 9 that it had the male driver in custody and that investigators had recovered one firearm. They stated that there was a second, unknown vehicle involved in the shooting with the red car and that no motive had yet been established.
