Man dies after running onto Interstate 94

An 18-year-old Grosse Pointe Woods resident died after being struck by a semi-truck on Interstate 94 in Harper Woods at about 5 p.m. July 29.

Harper Woods police had received calls that the man was running on the freeway.

The man apparently ran down the embankment and onto the freeway near Kingsville Street. He ran across three eastbound lanes before jumping the wall to enter westbound traffic near Kenosha Street, according to police information.

After jumping the wall, police said, the man stood in traffic.

“The man was struck by a large semi-truck and was fatally injured,” Harper Woods Public Safety Director James Burke stated in a report. “(Harper Woods Department of Public Safety) detectives are investigating this incident with assistance from the Michigan State Police Crash Reconstruction Team.”

“We extend our deepest sympathy to the family of this young man,” he stated.
