HARPER WOODS — A man has been charged with child abuse after a 3-year-old Harper Woods boy was hospitalized for head injuries.

According to the Harper Woods Department of Public Safety, the incident in question occurred Sept. 3 in a residence in the 20700 block of Hunt Club Drive in Harper Woods. Police said the child was taken to a nearby hospital after becoming unresponsive and had to be rushed into surgery.

The child was in stable condition and was recovering from his injuries in the hospital as of Sept. 13, according to police.

An investigation by Harper Woods detectives resulted in the arrest of Christopher Solomon Williams, the live-in boyfriend of the child’s mother. Williams recently had moved to the area from Las Vegas. Investigators said Williams was caring for the child on the day of the incident while the mother was running errands.

Williams was arraigned and formally charged Sept. 13 with one count of first-degree child abuse. Bond was set at $150,000 cash. His next court date is a preliminary examination scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Oct. 2 in 32-A District Court. Williams could face up to life in prison due to the charge.

As of Sept. 13, Williams had not retained or been appointed an attorney.
