ROCHESTER — Those who shop or dine in downtown Rochester this March will have a chance to start spring off with shopping sprees of up to $1,000.

The Rochester Downtown Development Authority is hosting its sixth annual Mad Money March event, which DDA Events Coordinator Jenna O’Dell said is an incentive to spend dollars in downtown Rochester to be entered in a drawing for a chance to win shopping sprees of $1,000, $500 or $250 at participating businesses.

“In March, people are thinking of spring, so it’s a good time to get out of the house and start shopping again. You can shed your winter layers, design a fresh wardrobe or get out for dinner,” O’Dell said.

To qualify for entry into the drawings, patrons must spend at least $100 combined at one or more of the 35 participating businesses in March. Customers will be allowed one entry for every $100 spent through March 31, and four winners will be notified April 1.

“You have a better chance of winning a shopping spree than the lottery, so you might as well give it a try,” O’Dell said.

It really isn’t hard to spend $100 in downtown Rochester, which O’Dell said is packed with unique stores, spas and salons offering an array of services, as well as a variety of dining options.

Linda Skinner, who owns the Nourish Mind Body & Soul wellness spa in downtown Rochester, encourages people to shop local during the promotion.

“Rochester is an awesome area, and there are so many great merchants here. This promotion is a great way to check out some new places, check out some places that have been here for a long time and you have never been, and to support the community,” Skinner said.

Patrons must bring their receipts to one of three locations to be validated: the DDA office, 308 1/2 S. Main St.; Fieldstone Winery, 223 S. Main St.; or South Street Skateshop, 410 S. Main St.
