DETROIT/ST. CLAIR SHORES — “The support of the community is really what’s keeping the staff going right now,” said Lisa Caradonna, an executive assistant at Ascension St. John Hospital.

That’s why gestures like that of Gilbert’s Lodge, 22335 Harper Ave. in St. Clair Shores, means so much to hospital staff.

Louis Bricolas, the owner of Gilbert’s Lodge, donated 60 individually-wrapped lunches to the hospital March 30.

“It’s our way of thanking these patriots for their dedication to our community,” he said in a press release.

Manager Flip Ulrich said that they wanted to support the hospital workers in any way that they could.

“They’re on the front lines of this and they’re the real heroes in this war,” she said. “We appreciate our customers supporting us so much, so we wanted to pay it forward. We like to get involved in community service things because it’s good to.”

Bricolas donated lunch to members of the U.S. Coast Guard during the federal government shutdown in January 2019 and said that he hopes to start a similar chain of businesses helping healthcare workers at this time.

“The community support and Gilbert’s and all of the local restaurants ... every single one have been reaching out,” Caradonna said, adding that there have even been families that have reached out and provided lunch for the entire hospital. “That generosity is humbling, at best.”

Gilbert’s Lodge is open for carryout orders 4-9 p.m. every day, and Ulrich said they would remain open “as long as people want us to.” Gilbert's Lodge can be reached by calling (586) 772-9720.
