HARPER WOODS — With the application deadline having expired earlier this month, the Library Board is on to its next task — reviewing the qualifications of its pool of applicants.

The library received several applications for a new director to replace Mary Howard, though officials weren’t able to provide an exact number. Howard resigned from her post earlier this year.

“Each applicant possesses their own skill set and talents,” Library Board member Mary Kingston said in an email last week. “The board is in the process of carefully reviewing each application that was received.  That is where we stand at this time.”

Senior library staff has been filling in by taking on the director’s duties in the interim.

In the advertisement for a new director, the board stated that it is looking for someone with a masters of library science degree from an American Library Association-accredited program who is eligible for a Level 1 or Level 2 certification from the Library of Michigan, according to the job posting.

City Councilwoman Veronica Paiz, who was the Library Board president prior to resigning to serve in her City Council post, praised what the library has to offer the community.

“Our library is an important treasure for the people of this city, and a treasure we cannot do without,” she said in an email. “The Harper Woods Library has always paid great attention to our community’s diverse needs — dating back to hosting dances in the 1960s!”

Paiz anticipates that the Library Board will find someone who is an asset to the library.

“A good library director learns about the community from the community,” she said.

“I expect that the Library Board will hire a new library director with great leadership and community outreach skills, one who cultivates funding and emerging technologies, and encourages positive transformations in ourselves and in Harper Woods.”
