UTICA — The Utica Public Library recently purchased a new book collection called VOX Books to make reading possibly more fun for children while also making learning to read and understanding a story easier.

VOX Books are books that read to you when you press a button, and all you have to do is turn the page. No need for CDs, bags or containers.

The books read the words on the page when the pages are turned.

Marsha Doege, the library director, said that the library currently has 10 such books that it was able to add to its collection.

The library requested these books after a meeting with a representative from VOX.

“At a recent Suburban Library Cooperative meeting, a representative from VOX Books addressed the directors and had samples and book lists for the titles they were carrying in the VOX format,” Doege stated in an email.

She likes the simplicity of the audiobooks.

“I was certainly impressed, as it gives children an interactive experience with reading, and the speaker is built in, so no CD players, etc., are needed,” she said.

“One self-contained unit: how perfect is that?” Doege stated.

She said the books have been getting a good response and that if they continue to do well, the library will order more.

“We’ve started our collection with an order of 10 books and will add to it as demand and price allow. So far, the response has been positive and the books are circulating well,” Doege said in the email.

Katherine Francis, the children’s services coordinator for the library, was able to select the first order of VOX Books.

“What is really nice about the VOX Books is that kids can have the convenience to listen to a book over and over again. Repetitiveness is essential for kids to learn a new concept, and the VOX Books are great for that,” Francis said in an email.

“When kids have heard a story multiple times, they can really start to dive deeper into the story and begin understanding things like plot, setting, problem/solution, cause and effect at a younger age,” Francis stated.

The Utica Public Library is located at 7530 Auburn Road. For more information, call the library at (586) 731-4141.
