HARRISON TOWNSHIP/CLINTON TOWNSHIP — The popular 2001 comedy film “Legally Blonde” will come to life with a lot more singing and dancing when the L’Anse Creuse High School choir performs the musical version onstage Jan. 17-19.

Choir Director John Paul Clark said “Legally Blonde the Musical,” based on the novel by Amanda Brown and the film starring Reese Witherspoon, is a bit different in that it’s more lively from start to finish and focuses more on the hidden jokes in this musical version written by Heather Hach.

“It’s fast-paced, upbeat and very clever,” Clark said. “It’s a very well-written musical.”

Performances will be held at the John R. Armstrong Performing Arts Center, 24600 Frederick Pankow Blvd. in Clinton Township.

Clark said the cast of 70 students began rehearsing in November. An early start was necessary due to the demanding, albeit exciting, musical numbers.

“It’s by far the most challenging musical in terms of the instrumentation and vocals,” Clark said. “A lot of musicals will be upbeat and begin to slow, but this is 90 percent upbeat … a lot of vocal lines.”

“Legally Blonde the Musical” is the story of a woman named Elle Woods, who chases after her ex-boyfriend to Harvard Law School in an attempt to win him back. She surprises those in her circle of sorority sisters by managing to eventually become a successful lawyer while staying true to herself.

Senior Kasey Kanka, of Harrison Township, is portraying one of Elle’s closest friends, Margot.

“She’s a bit ditzy, but she’s fun — a firecracker,” said Kanka, who will open the musical with a solo performance of “Ohmigod.”

Kanka said the plot is a lesson in “don’t judge a book by its “cover.”

“She (Elle) has this whole journey to try and figure out who she is; she’s awesome,” Kanka said. “It’s a really good musical.”

Xavier Bush, a 2015 L’Anse Creuse High School graduate, is the musical’s director and choreographer. Emma Weider is portraying Elle Woods. Dante Chambers is Emmet Forest, the man Elle befriends at Harvard. Whitney McDaniel plays Paulette. Jacob Ashba will portray Professor Callahan. Michael Rademaker is Warner Huntington III, Elle’s ex-boyfriend. Lily Tack plays Vivienne Kensington. Peyton Jacob is Serena. Alex Thiele will portray Pilar. Quinn Jacob is Brook Wyndham. Claire Lanko plays Kate. Ava Schwenck is Enid.

Clark said students are also behind the set designs, lighting direction and soundboard.

“These kids have really risen to the challenge, especially my leads,” Clark said. “They have really taken a hold of the show. Most have gotten their own costumes, and they really put in a lot of work to make this show great. It’s been awesome to be a part of that.”

Tickets for “Legally Blonde the Musical” can be purchased in advance on the district website at lc-ps.org or at the Performing Arts Center box office, and cost $8 for students and $10 for adults.
