MACOMB COUNTY — Anthony Wickersham will remain Macomb County sheriff.

Unofficial results from the Macomb County Clerk’s Office, as of 1 p.m. Nov. 4, with 100% of Macomb County precincts reporting, indicate that nearly 56%, or 267,274 votes, went to Wickersham, the incumbent Democrat. He received 55,886 more votes than Republican candidate Terence Mekoski.

The 58-year-old Wickersham, of Bruce Township, has been sheriff since 2011.

“The vote went perfect, I won,” Wickersham said. “I think my years of service and dedication to the community stepped up and they saw I was a more qualified candidate than Terence.”

Mekoski, 55, works as a senior financial investigator for the Opioid Strike Force assigned to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Wickersham said his office will continue working to ensure it’s servicing contracted communities, and providing deputies with training and technology to keep up and keep themselves and the public safe.

“We’ll continue working on the Macomb County Jail and trying to come up with new programs and ways for care and custody of inmates,” he said. “I look forward to the next four years of moving the department forward.”

Prior to the election, Wickersham said he’d like to work with the criminal justice stakeholders in Macomb County to improve the operation of the Macomb County Jail, recruit the best candidates to fill vacant positions and be able to draw from a diverse background of applicants, ensuring they are retained.

“I am a 34-year veteran of the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office,” Wickersham said earlier this year. “I have proven myself to be a leader that is respected in the office. I have used technology to enhance our deputies’ ability to provide efficient services while protecting them during their shift.”

In the 2016 general election, Wickerhsam earned over 91,000 more votes than Republican Paul Smith, which represented nearly 62% of the vote.

Statistically similar results came for Wickersham in 2012, with 61% of Macomb County voters selecting him.
