Harper Woods police arrest suspect in gas station shootout

HARPER WOODS — The Harper Woods Department of Public Safety has arrested a suspect in connection to a shootout that took place at the Sunoco gas station at 19930 Kelly Road June 28.

According to police, 22-year-old Macomb County resident Jeremiah Harris was involved in a shootout after 10 p.m. at the gas station, which resulted in an innocent bystander, a 44-year-old Detroit man, suffering a gunshot wound. The man was hospitalized and later released.

Harper Woods detectives stated that Harris did not fire the shot that injured the bystander. However, Harris was charged with one count of firearms — possession by a felon; two counts of felony firearm; one count of ammunition — possession by a felon; and one count of carrying a concealed weapon. He was arraigned in 32-A District Court July 12 and was then bound over to Wayne County Circuit Court. His next court date is a final conference scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24.

Harris’ attorney, Rebekah Coleman, did not respond to requests for comment.

The Harper Woods Department of Public Safety said it is still working to identify any other suspects who could have been involved in the incident. Investigators ask anyone with information on the matter to contact them at (313) 343-2530 or to anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at (800) SPEAKUP.
