UTICA — With Halloween quickly approaching, many people are wondering what it will look like this year and what fun events might be available to them as plans are constantly changing due to COVID-19.

Keeping safe will be a priority this year during the holiday. Those looking for an event to enjoy while also social distancing might want to check out the second annual Halloween road rally fundraiser that will be taking place at 2 p.m. Oct. 17 in Utica.

Woman’s Life Chapter 911 Macomb Angels is hosting the Halloween road rally and is inviting all to join.

The road rally will begin and end at the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store located at 45550 Van Dyke Ave. Registration will begin at 2 p.m., and the rally will start at 2:30 p.m. Participants are asked to be to back at the location by 4:45 p.m. for awards that will take place at 5:15 p.m.

The road rally consists of participants receiving an envelope filled with clues that they must use to figure out their next tasks to complete.

Some tasks might be taking a picture of something, figuring out puzzles or asking a stranger to do something. Each task is scored with points. The team with the most points at the end wins.

In addition to figuring out the clues and solving them, participants must finish by the deadline.

Jenny Eisbrenner, who was a team captain during last year’s event, said that the rally events were lots of fun and she looks forward to the second annual event this year.

“We all had an absolute blast — nonstop laughter, great team-building and all for a very worthy cause. I will definitely participate in future events,” said Eisbrenner.

The cost to participate in the event is $50 per car. There will be a total of four people allowed per car. Only 20 cars will be able to participate due to COVID-19.

The group is encouraging participants to wear Halloween costumes. Masks are recommended during the event, if medically possible.

Registration forms and payment must be sent in by Sept. 30, and waivers will be emailed once the payment is received. No refunds will be available once payment is received.

Payments can be paid via PayPal to WL911macombangels@gmail.com with “Halloween” as the memo, via Venmo @WL911 with “Halloween” as the memo or by check payable to Woman’s Life Chapter 911, 8310 Hall Road #6, Utica, MI 48317.

Cindy Werbrouck, of Shelby Township, said that she and her husband are looking forward to participating in the Halloween road rally.

“It is a drive with a purpose and a chance to enjoy an afternoon with great friends. It’s competitive, solving clues that get you to the next destination and trying to be the first to the finish line,” she said.

She said it’s also a great time to get out and explore the local area.

“It’s a great way to explore some new sights in Macomb County and feel like a kid again,” she said.

Tara Powrozek, of Shelby Township, said the road rally gets participants thinking and working together.

“The road rally we did in the spring with the Women’s Life Chapter was so much fun. Lynn and the other volunteers are amazing and throw in a couple twists to make you think. This road rally is a Halloween theme, so it will be neat to see everyone’s costumes. Also, you’re helping support a great cause all the while having a great time,” said Powrozek.
