Grosse Pointe City Council approves sign for real estate business

GROSSE POINTE CITY — A slightly different twist on the typical business sign needed to get the greenlight from the Grosse Pointe City Council.

Because the owners of Benoit Real Estate Co., at 17712 Mack Ave., wanted backlighting on their logo — to be placed near the front entrance, facing Mack — the council had to review and approve the proposed sign.

“Usually, we like to approve these signs administratively,” said City Planner John Jackson, of McKenna Associates.

The real estate company proposed a single, 12-square-foot sign with aluminum letters forming “Benoit Real Estate Company” and their logo, a stylized lion’s head image.

Jackson said the City had “approved halo lighting in the past” and recommended approval of the proposal.

“We think because of the limited amount of illumination in the back … it’s not glaring … and it’s consistent” with the City’s sign standards, he said. The size and location of the sign meets the City’s ordinance, and the sign won’t produce glare for vehicles or pedestrians, the planners noted in a report.

The Jet’s Pizza sign in the City is lit in a similar fashion, but City Manager Pete Dame said that sign was grandfathered in.

“Any new sign cannot be internally illuminated,” Dame said.

All the same, Jackson and City officials felt the real estate business sign was appropriate and tasteful.

“This is actually pretty nicely done,” City Councilwoman Sheila Tomkowiak said.

During a Feb. 11 meeting, the council voted unanimously in favor of the sign proposal, clearing the way for it to be installed on the building.

The small office space was formerly home to the Grosse Pointe Democratic Club, Deputy Public Safety Director John Alcorn said.

“It’s between Rivard (Boulevard) and University (Place),” Dame said of the building’s location.
