METRO DETROIT — If your Christmas shopping list is running out of gas or ideas, the right auto accessories may become the perfect present on a winning wish list, according to auto experts.

Chuck Barr, parts manager at Dean Sellers Ford in Troy, said two of the biggest and most popular gift ideas for the holidays are accessories that keep a vehicle’s interior clean from dirt and moisture.

“The biggest deal this time of year is all-weather, heavy-duty floor mats, front and rear,” he said. “They’re more effective, they’re heavy-duty, they have really deep grooves molded into them to help retain and hold water.”

Barr said those floor mats come in a package consisting of two front mats and two rear mats.

In addition, he said a popular gift idea for SUV owners is a cargo liner for the trunk area that prevents wet items from soiling the interior fabric. He said the liner, which is made of a durable, bendable plastic, comes in different sizes depending on the vehicle.

“This is like a liner that has a lip going all the way around the whole
perimeter,” he said. “This will help to retain the water.”

Other gift ideas for pickup truck owners include bed liners for the truck bed or tonneau covers that help store and protect cargo in the bed, Barr added.

Steve Hough, service director at Suburban Toyota in Troy, agreed that all-weather floor mats are a good gift idea. He also recommended vehicle remote starters, which he said could be installed at a dealership.

“A lot of people get it for the cars,” he said. “You can start (the vehicle) up from inside your house, so by the time you get to it, it’s warm and thawed out.”

Another gift idea, Hough said, is a telescopic ice scraper with a brush on it for cleaning off the windshield.

“That way you can reach from one side all the way to the other,” he said.
