Arts, Beats & Eats will once again come to downtown Royal Oak during Labor Day weekend. The festival will host 200-plus musical acts; culinary options from more than 50 local restaurants, caterers and food trucks; a juried fine art show featuring at least 125 booths; family-friendly activities; and more. 2. Michigan State Fair
Sept. 1-5 • Suburban Collection Showplace, Novi
The Suburban Collection Showplace, 46100 Grand River Ave. in Novi, is gearing up for the Michigan State Fair Sept. 1-5. The event will feature a high-dive show; Rock N Roll K9's; a community and cultural stage; a main entertainment stage; the Shrine Circus; rides and food trucks along the midway; a beer tent; and a 5K run/walk benefitting Military Families United. New this year will be the Pork Chop Revue, a display of “some of the smartest swine in the country,” and the Cool Zoo, a wildlife experience that focuses on conservation, education and research. 3. Detroit Jazz Festival
Sept. 2-5 • Hart Plaza and Campus Martius Park
The free Detroit Jazz Festival, now in its 43rd year, will take place Sept. 2-5 in Hart Plaza and along Woodward in Campus Martius Park. Scheduled performers include Leslie DeShazor, the Allen Dennard Quintet, the Keith Hall Trio, the Michael Dease Quintet, Anissa Lea, The Ralphe Armstrong Trio, The Soul Rebels, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Dianne Reeves, the Charles McPherson Quintet featuring Brian Lynch, Artemis, Abdullah Ibrahim & Ekaya, Ranky Tanky with special guest Lisa Fischer, artist-in-residence Chucho Valdés and more. 4. Labor Day Roundup and Art in the Village
Sept. 5 • Downtown Franklin
Franklin is hosting several forms of entertainment this Monday. The Labor Day Roundup will include food, midway games, pony rides, a bake sale, an antique auto show, a petting farm, clowns and a magician, and giant inflatables from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the downtown area. A parade will take place at noon. Art in the Village, on Franklin Road between 13 Mile and 14 Mile roads, will display pottery, jewelry, photography, wood, glass, sculptures and more, as well as live music. 5. Car show benefit
Sept. 3 • Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fraser
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6691, 17075 Anita Ave. in Fraser, will host its 10th annual car show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The cost to enter a vehicle is $20, with trophies being awarded in categories such as best car, best truck, best street rod, people’s choice and best entry by era. The event also will include music, food, drinks, a rummage sale, a bake sale, raffles and more. Money raised will go toward local efforts supporting the Wreaths Across America initiative; wreaths will be placed at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township Dec. 17.

Bonus: Clawson Comic Book and Toy Show
Sept. 4 • Knights of Columbus, Clawson
The Clawson Comic Book and Toy Show will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Knights of Columbus Father Lynch Council #4188, 870 N. Main St. in Clawson. Artist Mark Arminski is scheduled to appear. Admission costs $3, but ages 12 and younger can attend for free. Future shows are being planned for Oct. 23 and Nov. 20.
