BIRMINGHAM/BEVERLY HILLS/FRANKLIN — As the pandemic seemingly winds down and the world slowly starts to get back to normal — or something like it — many are still reluctant to give up the virus safety protocols, particularly social distancing.

Not a problem, because outdoor events are back in the Eagle’s coverage area, giving families ample opportunities to enjoy some open-air entertainment.

Birmingham, Beverly Hills and Franklin have announced a schedule of free summer shows, including outdoor movies and concerts.

The Birmingham Shopping District will bring back its popular outdoor movie night series after taking last year off due to COVID-19. Guests of all ages are invited to bring blankets, chairs and other cozy accoutrements and find a spot at Booth Park for a movie, beginning at dusk.

“We are excited to offer Movie Nights in the park once again this year. We know families really look forward to this tradition in downtown Birmingham,” Jaimi Brook, the  operations and events manager for the BSD, said in a prepared statement.

The movie nights will take place Friday, July 16 and Friday, Aug. 13. Pre-show entertainment begins at 7:30 p.m., and the movies will begin later as the sun sets. The July show will have the theme Christmas in July, with a pre-show Christmas karaoke session and a visit from a secret seasonal guest, followed by the movie “Elf.”

On Aug. 13, just ahead of Birmingham’s return to Woodward Dream Cruise festivities, the movie will be “Cars.”

In the event of a rainout, movies will be held the following day. Updates are available on the Birmingham Shopping District’s social media pages.

Booth Park is located at the intersection of Old Woodward Avenue and Harmon Road, north of the Rouge River.

Downtown Franklin will be bustling in August with events like Super Summer Sunday and the Summer Block Party.

On Aug. 15, Super Summer Sunday will take place 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Franklin Community Park, near the gazebo. Kids 12 years old and younger can enjoy glitter tattoos and a performance by Baffling Bill the magician.

A few days later, Main Street Franklin’s big Summer Block Party is scheduled for 5-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18. Live entertainment, comedy, food, kids activities and special sales from downtown merchants are planned, followed by an outdoor flick, Movies on the Green.

The Franklin Green is at the village’s downtown center, located on Carol Avenue, off of Franklin Road, between 13 Mile and 14 Mile roads.

For adult block partiers, a wine tasting and mixology event are planned.

And finally this Friday, July 16, you can follow the sound to Beverly Park for a second installment of the village’s Concerts in the Park series. Local bands GT4 and The Hood are slated to perform beginning at 7 p.m. Beverly Park is located at 18801 Beverly Road in Beverly Hills.
