A fire during the early morning June 28 that took multiple fire departments to knock down resulted in significant damage to a strip mall in the 19500 block of Kelly.

All of the Grosse Pointes responded to the five-alarm fire at 12:45 a.m. at a dollar store. The fire also caused smoke damage to adjacent buildings, according to information from the Harper Woods Fire Department.

“The fire is currently under investigation,” Fire Chief/Capt. Dave Mehl said on the morning of June 29.

“There was a heavy fire load because of the contents of the store,” he said.

“They had to take out several of the windows on the buildings,” he said of the fire suppression efforts.

The buildings were boarded up and blocked following the fire.
