FARMINGTON/FARMINGTON HILLS — Farmington Public Schools is welcoming students, family members and the community to utilize a “new perk” being offered in the district.

According to a press release from FPS, throughout the summer, the district’s IT team installed internet hot spots at each of the schools across the district.

“One thing that the pandemic taught us was how to complete many tasks remotely,” the release states. “Farmington Public Schools wanted to assist families with this shift.”

A district official could not be reached for comment on whether the hot spots were installed in anticipation of increased remote learning.

Hot spots were strategically placed where outdoor seating is available and/or there is space for parking, for utilization within vehicles.

Each hot spot has a range of 100 feet, the release states.

Hot spots can be found in the following locations:

• Farmington Early Childhood Center — front parking lot, west wall of the building.

• Beechview Elementary School — main parking lot, south wall of the building.

• Forest Elementary School — main parking lot, west wall of the building.

• Gill Elementary School  — main parking lot, south wall of the building.

• Hillside Elementary School — front parking lot, north wall of the building.

• Kenbrook Elementary School — main parking lot, south wall of the building.

• Lanigan Elementary School — main parking lot, south wall of the building.

• Longacre Elementary School — main parking lot, southeast wall of the building.

• East Middle School — near the main parking lot, north side of the building.

• Farmington STEAM Academy — side parking lot, northeast corner of the building.

• Power Middle School — main parking lot, center of the south wall.

• Warner Middle School — back of the building, south wall.

• Farmington High School — student lot, east wall of the building, near the custodial entry.

• Farmington Central High School — main parking lot, west wall of the building.

• North Farmington High School — near the student lot/TV 10, west side of the building.

Diane Bauman, who is FPS’s director of school/community relations, shared some thoughts about the addition of the hot spots.

“We wanted to be able to provide more internet access for our families,” Bauman stated via email. “This is just one of the ways that we were able to use our ESSER II funds,” which refers to the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund.
